Learn how to use the Task Module to assign and manage logistics actions in one place. Tasks improve operational visibility, support cross-docking, and reduce planning errors across multi-leg trips.
Description Summary
A task is an action to be completed that can be assigned to a team member or asset, improving planning and assignment of work to drive efficiency and keep track of your business’ operations.
Here’s some quick terminology for you to keep in mind:
- Task: The action item that must be completed. Examples could include a pick-up, delivery, load, or unload.
- Stop: The location where the Task will take place.
- Leg: A section of a trip that is made up of two tasks and two stops. For example, “Pick Up at Location A > Delivery at Location B” is a leg.
The Task Module includes a Task Board that allows you to seamlessly track all of your shipment tasks in one consolidated board, improving the visibility and management of your team’s work.

How It Works
Here are the key actions you can take within the Task Module:
- Create, Edit & Delete Tasks: Easily view and manage all of your tasks from one board, or create new ones.
- Create Customizable Filtered Views: Apply filters and save views to see and manage your tasks in a way that makes sense for your team, such as a view for your dispatcher of all orders arriving at your terminal that need to be planned and dispatched to their final destination.
- Cross-Docking Support to Split a Trip into 2 Legs: If you need to transfer goods to a second asset to continue to the final destination, the Task Module's leg splitting feature makes this quick and easy! When you select and split the leg, the commodities will automatically carry over from Leg 1 to Leg 2, creating new tasks to Unload and Load the commodities at the new stop, and then you can assign a new driver and asset for the 2nd leg of the trip.
- Manage Multiple Tasks at Once with Bulk Actions: You can select multiple legs and apply actions to all of them at once to make your planning more efficient! You can split multiple legs at the same stop at once, and assign them to drivers and assets.
Use Case Examples
-
A dispatcher uses filters to view only pickups at Chicago Terminal for the next 24 hours.
-
A planner bulk-assigns 10 deliveries to drivers at the start of a shift.
-
A CSR adds a follow-up task labeled “Call customer for dock time” using the “Other” task type.
Best Practices
-
Use filtered views for faster task scanning by terminal or shift.
-
Leverage leg splitting for transfers to avoid duplicate data entry.
-
Group bulk updates by location or task type to improve efficiency.
Common Issues & Troubleshooting
Can I use Tasks without having the Task Module?
For accounts that do not have the Task Module, you can create and manage tasks directly in the Task Tree while building an order. Learn more about how to do this here: https://help.roserocket.com/platform/creating-an-order
How do I track a non-shipment task?
Use the “Other” task type to create standalone actions like calls, check-ins, or administrative tasks.
